5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Joining a Fitness Class
Joining a new fitness class can be exciting—and a little overwhelming! To help make the right choice for you, here are five important questions to ask yourself before signing up.
1. What Style of Movement Do You Like?
There are so many types of fitness classes out there—from dance to strength training, yoga to HIIT. Knowing what style of movement you enjoy (or don’t enjoy) is a great place to start. If you end up in a class that isn’t for you, it’s unlikely you’ll keep showing up. Think back to past experiences: what made you feel good afterward? What made you avoid going back? If you’re new to fitness, consider what pace you like - do you enjoy moving fast or prefer slower activities? This helps narrow down your options.
2. Does the Class Schedule Work for You?
Life is busy and schedules change, so finding a class that fits your routine is key. If you’re a morning mover, signing up for a late evening class might not be your best bet - even if it sounds good at first. Consider options that link with your daily commitments, like right after work or even online classes if getting to a studio is tricky.
3. Is the Location Accessible?
Think about how you’ll get to the class. Is it walkable? Is parking available? Is it easy to get there by transit? Once you arrive, consider the space itself: is it on the main floor or up some stairs? Is there an elevator? Is the flooring gentle on your joints? These practical details matter, especially if you have mobility needs or are just getting started.
4. Do You Connect With the Instructor?
The instructor’s style and philosophy can make or break your experience. Reach out - ask questions, schedule a call, or even try a trial class, if possible. Reading reviews or chatting with current or past participants can also give you a feel for the vibe. You want someone who makes you feel comfortable, supported, and confident, not overwhelmed or pressured.
5. What Are Your Goals and Needs?
Why do you want to join a fitness class? Is it to build strength, improve flexibility, boost confidence, or something else? Knowing what you want to get out of a class will help you choose one that matches your needs. Keep in mind, some goals might be better served with personal training or smaller groups.
A Few Extra Tips
Feeling nervous? You’re not alone - most people feel that way the first time they show up. Instructors get nervous too! Remember, the hardest part is just walking in the door.
If you sign up and then realize before the cutoff date that the class isn’t right for you, or you find something else, let the instructor know. It might seem small, but your decision impacts the class size and the instructor’s ability to run it. Being upfront helps everyone.
